The Same

I'm a private tutor now. I have a student who, to be honest, is stubborn. He is not really good in language arts, especially in making sentences and answering completely. So, his mom, naturally, asked me to teach him how to be good at them.

It is not an easy job to teach him because he tends to do things his own way. When I told him how to answer, he said," Miss, you're wrong. It will make me answer incorrectly." I was quite irritated, not because he said that, but because of his attitude. I was there trying to tell him the right way, but there he was - trying to repeat his mistakes. I said, "Trust me!", but he acted as if he hadn't heard it. I was tired and it had been almost 2 hours. So, I shut my mouth and just watched him went his own way.

On the road, I was thinking: perhaps that's how I act towards God. I act as if I know the right thing, when actually I know nothing at all. I prayed that I may have a humble and teachable heart

When idealism clashes with others' opinion...

i'm learning how to understand others' opinion. learning to put myself in their shoes. learning to humbly see my way objectively.

before it became big i confessed Psalm 121 and 34 plus Hebrews 12.

i wanna shout it out loud, wanna declare that the Lord i worship is GREAT and MARVELOUS!!! all credit goes to Him.

Responsibility

Just a word...but its meaning is very great. Easily said, but hardly done.

Many people don't realize that they have responsibility. They merely know their rights and hold on to them; while, at the same time, ignoring their responsibility.

Many people know how to drive, know that they have rights to drive on the roads; yet, many of them don't realize that they must drive responsibly.

For example:
Many don't realize that safety belt and helmet is their responsibility if they're on the road.
Many don't realize that becak, bicycles, motorbikes, and cars have the same responsibility to obey the rules (traffic signs).

Those are just two simple examples which are oblivious to many of us.

If only we're honest enough to realize that we are held responsible toward others' safety on the roads.
If only we're humble enough to say,"That's me. I'm sorry."
If only we're brave enough to start changes.

Unforgettable Kindness

Today is amazing :D

Aku pergi ke SMA St. Hendrikus pertama kalinya naik mobil sendiri. I've gone there once by taxi...a year ago!! Itupun sopir taksinya juga sempat bingung lewat mana.

So, I didn't really know the way. Yes, I've asked my friends how to go there, but...you know the problem of a woman with an imaginary map :P

Awalnya siy mau naik taksi, tapi akhirnya aku berubah pikiran. Sebelum jalan, aku doa supaya g tersesat. Memang g tersesat, cuma aku melanggar peraturan.

G beli apa2, eh...numpang parkir!

"Mas, gpp ta?"

"Iya, mbak. Gpp."

"Atau saya parkir depan sana aj ya?"
"Jangan, mbak! Kuatirnya ada apa2. Kalau di dalam sini aman. Gpp kok. Nanti saya beritahu manajer saya."

Oh...ada manajernya! "Saya ijin ke manajernya sendiri aj, mas."

"Belum dateng, mbak. Gpp kok. Nanti saya yang tanggung jawab."

Waduh! Tambah sungkan aku.

"Saya tinggali nomer telpon aj, mas.. Jadi nanti kalau manajernya datang dan keberatan, saya pindahin mobilnya."

"G usa jg gpp, mbak. Manajernya baik kok."

"Mas, saya sampe jam 4, lho." Aku mulai nitip itu jam 9.30an.

"Gpp. Kita buka sampe malem. Lagian kalau Sabtu biasanya sepi."

Anyway, I still gave him my phone number, just in case the manager objected (which I can really understand).

Kalau tadi dia mintain aku uang nitip mobil, aku pasti kasih. Tapi dia sama skali g minta.

My Life Now

Pfffttt... after a loooooooonnnggg while... Here I am!!! ^^
Adjustment with the new routine takes time.

My students are nice and cute... and likes to talk for sure. They're smart, yet they're careless. Seems like I "kena batunya". After successfully avoiding paper works as a religion-character teacher, now I've to dealt with their hand-writings. Tiffany has a very neat and beautiful hand-writing, but a boy has a very terrible hand-writing. I can't read his...and neither do he. Can you believe that? He can't read his own hand-writing!!!

I just checking their homeworks...and guess what? This boy pasted LLL's picture as an editor in his Science homework about stages of development. I've taken some pictures of it, but can't upload them now. Hopefully soon :D

Back to School

My holiday will end soon
As the clock strikes 00.00

School, here I come
With a fresh mind and new spirit

April 22, 2010

Hohoho...

Wednesday, April 21st was Kartini Day, also the day I was summoned by my headmistress. To cut the story short...

For grade 3 :)

April 20, 2010

OH Noooooo.... (I'll think about it)

From April 19-April 21, the headmistress is calling all the teachers who prolong their contracts. She'll inform us the title (class teacher/ subject teacher/ grade leader), the class we're in, and the IMPORTANT thing to survive on this earth: SALARY :D

My friend told me that there is a rumor: "One subject teacher from grade 3 will be a class teacher. Everybody guesses it's me (Debby)."

Frankly speaking, I like being a religion-character teacher. I don't have to deal with numbers, and memorizing things (well, only Bible verses). A class teacher must teach 4 subjects: Math, Indonesian, Social studies, and Science.

Since I was a fifth grader, I hate Math. Because I wasn't good at Math, I had to join additional class after school. It started at 2.30pm if I'm not mistaken, and ended at 5pm. There were two sessions, and there was a recess in between.

One day, I failed to solve Math problems on time, so the teacher wouldn't let me had my recess. I had to finish all the problems correctly. I couldn't do them correctly until the recess time was over. Since that moment I hate Math.

In Indonesia, the report to parents are written in numbers. For Math...once in my life, I got 5 which means not good, below average. I forget when...either in fifth grade or sixth grade. My mom was disappointed and angry. I couldn't do anything to make myself liking Math. I think Math is my nemesis :P

Well..if the headmistress offers me to be a class teacher for next school year...I have to think about it seriously.

I know that there are lots of "benefits" as a class teacher. I can develop a deeper relationship with my students, I can impart values to them, touch their deepest soul, plus... I can get my NUPTK which will give me monetary benefit. But that's not the point because in order to get NUPTK I've to prepared lots of things, and it takes lots of time.

Anyway...I've to be ready with whatever Life brings to me.

Teacher is NOT a SAFE Job!!!

I always thought: What harm can an elementary student do to their teacher? NOTHING!!
Well..I was wrong.

Yesterday, as the bell rang - a sign for the first and second graders that their recess has over - a first grader came to me.
"Miss, what time is it?" As he asked, his lunchbox fell and landed on my left foot. It hurt so much!!!
"OUCH!!!" My facial expression showed that I hurt so much.
The boy took his lunch box and said," Miss, what time is it?"
I grabbed his shoulder and asked," What should you say to me?"
"What time is it, Miss?"
I cupped his face in my hands, looked straight into his eyes,"WHAT-should-you-SAY-to-me?"
Grinned, he said,"I'm sorry, Miss... Miss, what time is it?"
ARRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH... can you imagine? I pointed a clock on the canteen wall, and off he went to see it more clearly.

I took off my shoe to check, and surprised to see my toe - the second one from left side - was bleeding. It was skinned and bleed.

Students have potential to harm their teachers...accidentally of course.

He is My Rock

Psalms 92:12-15 (HNV)
The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree. He will grow like a cedar in Levanon.
They are planted in the LORD's house. They will flourish in our God's courts.
They will still bring forth fruit in old age. They will be full of sap and green,
to show that the LORD is upright. He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

(BBE)
The good man will be like a tall tree in his strength; his growth will be as the wide-stretching trees of Lebanon.
Those who are planted in the house of the Lord will come up tall and strong in his gardens.
They will give fruit even when they are old; they will be fertile and full of growth;
For a sign that the Lord is upright; he is my Rock, there is no deceit in him.

Teachers' Entertainment

I think one of the entertainment had by teachers are students’ works. When their works are excellent, we are happy. But there are times when we laughed at their clumsy work. I dunno whether it’s mean or not. I’ll let you decide by yourself.

Here are some examples (sorry, they’re in Indonesian):
•Suramadu singkatan dari: Gerbangkertasusila (instead of Surabaya-Madura)
Another student said Surabaya and Jakarta (How come? LOL)
•Hotel Majapahit sebelumnya bernama: Hotel Pertengkaran (instead of Hotel Oranje)
•Pada zaman perjuangan, arek Suroboyo tetap bertempur walaupun dengan menggunakan senjata seadanya yaitu: Museum (LOL this one really cracked us up. Anyway, it does make sense. If you throw a museum at your enemy, they’ll surely be defeated.)
Still another student answered it with President LOL

Now, if you’re a teacher, you know what I mean at the first paragraph. However, if you’re not, tell me how you’d react or what your first-honest respond is after reading it.

Amazing!!!

Today, as I taught the second grader about the twelve disciples of Christ, God made me amazed as well as ashamed.

A student who is known as a slow learner, and has a short-span concentration could mention all of the disciples correctly. She said," Miss, I know the song!" And she sang it. I was really amazed and, at the same time, ashamed. I judged her by what I heard about her. I only saw the outward appearance.

Daddy reminded me gently about Samuel when he was about to anoint one of Jesse's sons. He told Samuel,"... for the LORD sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart."

I asked this girl to help us memorizing the names by singing the song. At first she was reluctant, but the whole class encouraged her. She sang beautifully and...confidently!!

Thanks, Dad, for this valuable lesson I learnt today.

Excerpt from: The Heart of a Teacher

Excerpt from: The Heart of a Teacher

The child arrives like a mystery box...
with puzzle pieces inside
some of the pieces are broken or missing...
and others just seem to hide

But the HEART of a teacher can sort them out...
and help the child to see
the potential for greatness he has within...
a picture of what he can be

Her goal isn't just to teach knowledge...
by filling the box with more parts
it's putting the pieces together...
and creating a work of art

The process is painfully slow at times...
some need more help than others
each child is a work in progress...
with assorted shapes and colors

First she creates a classroom...
where the child can feel safe in school
where he never feels threatened or afraid to try...
and kindness is always the rule

She knows that a child
can achieve much more
when he feels secure inside
when he's valued and loved...
and believes in himself
...and he has a sense of pride

She models and teaches good character...
and respect for one another
how to focus on strengths...not weaknesses
and how to encourage each other

She gives the child the freedom he needs...
to make choices on his own
so he learns to become more responsible...
and is able to stand alone

He's taught to be strong and think for himself...
as his soul and spirit heal
and the puzzle that's taking shape inside...
has a much more positive feel

The child discovers the joy that comes...
from learning something new...
and his vision grows as he begins
to see all the things that he can do

A picture is formed as more pieces fit...
an image of the child within
with greater strength and confidence...
and a belief that he can win!

All because a hero was there...
in the HEART of a teacher who cared
enabling the child to become much more...
than he ever imagined...or dared

A teacher with a HEART for her children...
knows what teaching is all about
she may not have all the answers...
but on this...she has no doubt

When asked which subjects she loved to teach,
she answered this way and smiled...
"It's not the subjects that matter...
It's all about teaching the CHILD."

Dear Daddy,
Let me be a teacher like You. Let Your heart be mine.

Thank God!!

Yesterday, a class-teacher came to me and asked,"Miss, did you say something to X?"
"No. Why?"
"After the bell rang, I took them downstairs. X hadn't been picked up yet. So I told him to wait for his mom around Toga Mas corner and he might read there. But after some time, I heard Bu Pur called his name thru paging. I looked for him, and found him sitting in the corner of the classroom reading something. Can you guess what he was reading?"
I shook my head, and wondering.
"He was reading Bible!" She told me with an enthusiastic tone.
I almost couldn't believe what I'd just heard. X? Reading a Bible?
"What kind of Bible? The one with pictures in it?" I asked because I know he likes reading illustrated books.
"No. The regular one! He was reading Genesis!"
"Really? Woooow!"
I was so happy that I couldn't contain it. I was almost screaming and jumped! This X had made us didn't know what to do. He's a student with special needs.
"Let's hope that it'll last for good," she said.

I learnt that being a teacher isn't about teaching only, passing out knowledge, and being a role model. A teacher is someone who sows seed in every student's life. I may not see it grow and fruitful today, but surely I'll reap the fruits later on.

Those who wept as they went out carrying the seed will come back singing for joy, as they bring in the harvest.
Psalms 126.6

Today

Today I woke up at 6, still sleepy. Trying to figure out how to survive this day. I had a prayer meeting, and taught 2 classes. Kinda full.

I believed I can survive this day after what happened in a classroom: When I was teaching, I asked my students to open 1 Timothy 4.12. I asked them what does "teladan" (example) means. One boy answered me," Not wearing clothes at all." I was shocked and for a moment I thought he was joking. But his face was serious. I was tempted to tease him, but I restrained myself.

His classteacher put it in her status. A teacher, who sits next to me, opened Facebook thru her cellphone and showed it to me. I laughed outloud and told her the whole story. And just now, the classteacher entered teacher lounge, and we made joke about it. And again I laughed outloud that other teachers asked what happened, so I told them the story.

It really helped me thru this day. Coz just before I taught I felt like crying coz I saw a comment from my friend about For Someone Special. There is something bothering me, and I don't know what to do. And I really miss my grandpa, wish I could see him and talk about it. But, well... I'm okay now. I choose to be okay :)

Dare to be Different

This morning I realized that I haven't totally submitted to the government. Could be seen in the simplest things: sometimes I still compromising, when I ride a motorbike in an alley, I don't wear a helmet. Yet, it's one of the rule on the street.

The Bible says that all governments comes from God, so we must submit ourselves to our governments.

I imagine if we, as the followers of Christ, do what the others do, we can't be the light and salt of the world.

Yesterday afternoon I saw Kick Andy in Metro TV, he interviewed an artist family. In the studio, there were Adi, Iyut, Uci, and Ayudia Bing Slamet. Andy asked several questions. One of them that caught my attention was this question: "Is there any burdens in bearing Bing Slamet's name?"

Responding to the question, Adi said,"It makes us think twice before doing something."

Uci continued,"We don't want people said: "Why! Bing Slamet's children are not smart."

Earlier on that very Sunday, Daniel Yanuar said (in my church) that a name was very important. We were called by our names.

Moreover, we're bearing our Father's name in everything we do and say. In other words, if we do and say everything that is contrary to the characters of God, we're disgracing Him.

So, dare to be different! Being the salt and light of the world are our calling as his children.

Finally, whatsoever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.

From Zero to Hero

Waktu dengar frase itu, otomatis pikiranku mengartikannya menjadi:
Dari bukan siapa-siapa menjadi pahlawan
Tapi beberapa minggu yang lalu, aku menemukan arti baru dari frase “From Zero to Hero”.

Setengah bercanda dia berteriak "Baik Tuhan, aku taat".
